Middlesex Seconds, in their Second Eleven Trophy – Zone B match with Nottinghamshire at Uxbridge CC on Friday July 8th, lost once again - the match the previous day against Northamptonshire at Winchmore Hill having been a No Result due to the weather.
Nottinghamshire had a flying start, having won the toss, to reach 169-2 in the 30th both wickets falling in this over with Will Smith 95 and Anurag Singh 55 both gone. From here Middlesex restricted Nottinghamshire to 95 runs from the last twenty overs as Nottinghamshire finished on 264 all out in the 50th. This was mainly due to the off-spinners Nick Compton with 3-28 and Ollie Roland-Jones with 3-38.
Middlesex also had a good start as they reached 1-93 in the 21st when Mark Wright was run out for 49. After this Billy Godleman and Nick Compton steadied the ship as they reached 138-2 in the 32 when Godleman went for 50. Again spin predominated in the later stages of the innings as only as 89 runs were scored in last 18 overs despite 55 from Compton as Middlesex were bowled out of the last ball of the 50th for 227. This was mainly due to slow left armer Samit Patel with 3-32 and off spinner Will Smith who finished off an all round permanence with 3-45.
Thus Middlesex fell 37 short as they lost there fourth trophy match in a row, where any play had been possible, and this also meant that Nottinghamshire, who have only lost one match in the group to Northamptonshire, had to win their last two matches to qualify for the semi-finals.
