Middlesex Seconds lose again in The Second Eleven Trophy among the showers

Middlesex Seconds in their Second Eleven Trophy Zone B match with Essex on Monday July 4th 2005 lost again to make it three defeats in a row.

On winning the toss Middlesex asked Essex to bat first and they had a good start as they reached 132- 1 in the 25 with Alastair Cook gone for 65 when Will Jefferson went soon afterwards for 68 in the 29th the score had moved on to 152-2. Mark Petini with 63 and Gareth James 36 then steadied the rest of the innings as Essex finished on 258-5 from their 50 overs. Boyd Rankin taking 3-42 was the pick of the bowlers, however the Middlesex bowling was hampered by the loss of Chris Whelan who broke down after 5 balls with the reoccurrence of an old thigh injury in the 19th.


In their reply Middlesex also had a good start as they reached 121- 1 at the end of the 30th, with Billy Godleman gone for 48 when the heavens opened and there was hour delay with no lose of overs due to good over rate of both sides. When play resumed they were soon in trouble with Robbie Hodges gone for 57 in the 32nd with score on 124-2. From here they collapsed to 200-5 in the 44 despite 39 from Mark Wright. In the last six overs the tail could only amass 45, including 33 from Chris Wright, as they where all out in 50th for 245. For Essex Tim Phillips took 3-63 as Middlesex went down for their third consecutive defeat in the competition this time by 13 runs.
