Middlesex lose under D/L regulations at the Brit Oval

Vs: Surrey

Match: T20

Venue: Brit Oval

Day 1

Middlesex lost their Twenty20 Cup match at the Brit Oval when heavy rain forced the players off the field; Surrey winning by 22 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis rules.

After losing Owais Shah for six in the fourth over, Middlesex were well placed at 41-1 after five overs but disaster struck in the sixth over when Ricky Clarke came into the attack. He had Scott Styris superbly caught by the diving Sampson at third man for 2 off his first delivery, Ed Smith was caught for 33 (off 22 balls, 5 fours) off the fifth, and Ed Joyce was bowled first ball off the last.

With two new batsmen in, Middlesex fell further behind the scoring rate required with the weather closing in. Thirteen runs were scored off the 11th over before the umpire’s suspended play due to rain. No further play was possible.

Earlier, Surrey, who won the toss and elected to bat first, had been contained to 28-2 after five overs. They lost Alistair Brown bowled by Melvyn Betts in the first over, and Benning caught by Owais Shah off Scott Styris in the fifth.

Batty and Clarke added 49 in five overs before Chris Peploe trapped Batty leg before for 39. The final 10 overs produced 103 runs with Clarke scoring 46 off 28 balls, Mahmood 19 off 12 balls, and Tim Murtagh taking 22 off the final over of the innings bowled by Melvyn Betts. Surrey finished on 180-7 off their 20 overs.

Irfan Pathan took 2-26 off his four overs, Chris Peploe 1-29 off 4 overs and Scott Styris 1-32 off 4 overs.
