Shah sets up Middlesex Twenty20 win

Vs: Hampshire

Match: T20

Venue: The Rose Bowl

Day 1

Middlesex opened their Twenty20 campaign at The Rose Bowl with a comfortable 18 run win against Hampshire after setting a record score of 210-6 for the ground.

After Ben Hutton won the toss, Middlesex batted first with Owais Shah and Ed Smith opening before an estimated crowd of 7500. This pair gave Middlesex a superb start putting on 91 runs with Smith scoring 38 off 22 balls before he was run out.

Owais Shah hit Craig McMillan’s solitary over for 28 runs, with 2 sixes and 4 fours and later he hit Shaun Udal for 18 in four balls. At the half way point, Middlesex had reached 130-1but Udal had his revenge in his following over when he had Shah caught in the deep having made 72 off 30 balls (4 sixes & 8 fours).

Scott Styris made 29 off 20 balls, Ed Joyce 25 off 16 balls and Jamie Dalrymple was 32 not out off 24 balls as the Middlesex innings finished at 210-6. Shane Warne took 1-29 off his four overs.

Chasing such a large total, Hampshire were not helped when Irfan Pathan conceded only a single off the opening over, and the Hampshire total was only 40-1 after 6 overs.

Pothas scored 59 off 39 balls before hitting a catch straight back to Chris Peploe in the 12th over to leave Hampshire on 105-3. It should have been worse, but Ben Scott missed an easy stumping chance off McMillan who went on to make 31 off 11 balls (including 4 sixes) before Irfan Pathan had him caught by Weekes. Pathan then dismissed Shane Warne next ball for 12, stumped by Ben Scott.

With five overs to go, the Hampshire reply had reached only 144-5 and the required run rate proved too much for the later batsmen. Hampshire were 192-7 at the end of the match.

Irfan Pathan bowled superbly finishing with 3-16 off his four overs, and Chris Peploe had an encouraging 1-38 off his four overs. The Middlesex catching was disappointing with at least three chances spilled.
